Context/Significance
At the confluence of major transportation infrastructure, a public private initiative aims to bring new development into an underutilized area of the City. The mixed use project that Yawkey Station will serve includes an ambitious plan to build on air-rights over the I-90 Interstate highway, and it will be just a short walk away from the venerable Fenway Park of Boston Red Sox fame and major new residential development in the Fenway neighborhood.

Description
The station is located in the existing open cut within the rail and highway right of way along the Framingham/Worcester Line. The Project was designed to significantly expand the capacity of the Station in anticipation of the increased demand that new development will bring. The new design transformed the station from an existing, single low level platform that was 230 feet in length to two, high level platforms that are 630 feet and 660 feet long. The project included the relocation of two tracks and the construction of a new head house to provide vertical access to the Station from the street with both elevator and stair. It included emergency access and egress, utility connections and other improvements.

Special Features
The station was another successful design-build project in which DHK joined with a contractor to compete for the job. With our vast experience in rail mass transit, DHK was able to provide a dramatic, winning design within a guaranteed price budget and a demanding schedule.
