The Phillips Brooks School stood vacant for several years until it was acquired by the Quincy-Geneva Community Development Corporation. DHK was retained to design the adaptive reuse and conversion of the building into affordable housing. The work included the historic restoration of the exterior of the1898 grammar school and the design additional new homes for the surrounding site.
The redesign of the school building to accommodate 29 one, two, and three-bedroom units was done with care to preserve the integrity of the architectural elements and composition of the facade. All original openings were maintained and incorporated as windows or as new doors to the units.
