Curtis Apartments, a 372-unit state-supported public housing community in Worcester, MA, is undergoing a total multi-phase redevelopment. The existing 1950s-era brick buildings will be demolished and replaced by more than a dozen new, modern, energy-efficient residential buildings, a public library, and three new public parks. The redevelopment will provide 527 apartments, all designed to better meet the needs of today’s families.
Working with project developer Trinity Financial, Inc., DHK developed an overall plan to fulfill the project’s programmatic requirements and define the types and number of buildings. We worked with landscape architect Copley Wolff Design Group, Inc. to create a master plan for the 6+ acre property that will rejuvenate multiple city blocks, connecting streets and pedestrian ways in a new Worcester neighborhood.
DHK designed the first two buildings, currently under construction, to include 129 new housing units. We are now designing Phase Two which will include 150 units in five buildings plus the branch library for the Worcester Public Library and an Economic Opportunity Center for the Worcester Housing Authority.
